How Is Giant Hogweed Treated in the East of England?
Giant hogweed sap burns skin on contact with sunlight, so treatment is carried out in full protective clothing. Plants are sprayed or stem-injected in spring before they flower, and any flower heads are cut and bagged to stop seeding. One plant drops thousands of seeds that stay viable in the soil for years, which is why a programme runs over several seasons.
What Are the Rules on Giant Hogweed in the East of England?
Giant hogweed is listed in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild. Cut material and contaminated soil are controlled waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and must go to a licensed site.
